Owning a pet and selling your Westchester home is a combination that necessitates some thoughtful consideration as to how NOT have your pet complicate the selling process of showings and open houses
Many prospective buyers are allergic to pets, are intimidated by them (especially large barking dogs, birds, reptiles), or simply don’t like them. In order to avoid turning off any potential buyers in a selling market that is already challenging, the following pointers can help pet owners successfully sell their homes.
1. Most pet lovers don’t want to hear this, but the best solution to selling your home is relocating your animal when it is on the market. Casting them to the backyard, garage, or laundry room is not fair to them and could still turn off some potential buyers and buyer’s agents
2. If you don’t want to remove your pet long-term, try to at least make arrangements for it during showings, like animal daycare. Not only will your home come across as more impressive, but your furry friend will have a fun day filled with exercise.
3. If for personal reasons, option 1 or 2 doesn’t work for you, be sure to create a safe haven for your pet, and your potential buyer. Put a do-not-enter sign on the door of the room where you have put your pet and lock the door. Make sure that your realtor has noted in the listing of your home that there are special instructions about pets
4. Professionally clean carpets and remove all stains. If stains remain then the carpet should be replaced, without question. Be sure to vacuum at least once per day (As close to the showing or open house as possible).
5. Minimize offensiveness by keeping cat litter boxes extremely clean and out of site. In addition, make sure to clean up the backyard. Remove food and water dishes, pet toys, cages and beds.
6. Invest in a good air purifier that will help eliminate pet odor and dander. If you follow these simple steps, selling your Westchester home while owning a pet should make things easier for your potential buyer to roam around your house, and evaluate with minimized distractions.
